The right to happiness

More than two centuries ago, the United States included the pursuit of happiness among the rights of its Constitution . And the European Union is thinking of inserting a generic right to happiness in the Internet Bill of Rights which should be launched next year.

But what is happiness? And why, despite the scientific progress and the widespread well-being we enjoy compared to a century ago, are there so many unhappy people around? I often ask myself this, even with reference to the Internet: we have never been so connected, we have never had so many opportunities to inform ourselves and to become architects of our destiny, yet we seem unhappy. What if the Internet was the problem? Of course, when we were in lockdown we realized how much we missed the looks, the hugs, being together with others, watching a sunrise or a sunset. In short, simple things and not digital at all. But the problem is another.

The Net is a formidable tool, it helps us to live better and makes us more resilient. And so long live the digital resurgence that we are experiencing in a pandemic: without it, life would be much more difficult. And yet the Net must be lived in moderation . Being always and only connected, becoming unable to turn off the mobile phone, living with the overwhelming rhythm of social network notifications, counting one's value with the number of followers or likes, will not lead us to happiness.

To be happy we must recover the ability to dream. Without caring too much about the judgment of others, of those who tell us that we will never make it. In the film The Pursuit of Happiness , the protagonist tells his son: “If you have a dream you have to protect it. If you want something go and chase it " . With a smartphone in your pocket, of course, but knowing that every now and then we will turn it off. Have a nice trip.
